Home : What I wish I knew about nursing

Allie Wilson
“It’s a dream come true to be working on this project with you and RCNA. I am incredibly passionate about nursing and caring for others, so I can’t wait to begin reading all your amazing stories and insights. What’s even more wonderful is knowing that we’ll be putting together a valuable resource that will help other nurses, in particular the next generation, in such a unique way. From my own experience I know I would have loved such a book when I was starting out in my nursing career. For example, I desperately wish the younger version of me had someone in my ear saying: “Before you can look after others, you have to look after yourself!”

Marty Wilson
“When I was a full time Stand Up Comic I used to come home from a so-so gig and have a great, big whinge to Allie about the crowd being too drunk, too noisy, or too whatever. Then she would tell me some of the drama, inspiration, courage and – at times – horror of her workplace, and I’d just mumble ‘OK, let’s talk about your day.’ Nurses do things every day that I know I just couldn’t do, and I’m thrilled that this idea I created will help Allie and Debra pass on the experience and hindsight of your wonderful profession to a new generation.”

The Interview
If you’d like to be involved, please answer at least 5 of these questions - and we hate to be bossy but the last one is mandatory. Feel free to put your thoughts down for all of them if you would like to. And please tell us – in as many or few words as you like - about your nursing story and the path that led you to these insights.

The purpose of these questions is to draw out the real you behind the mask/uniform/desk, so don’t try to be flowery or inspirational or whatever, just be yourself. And this isn’t a job interview or a formal review, so throw in a few swear words if you need to get them off your chest, we can pretty up the language later! (Of course, if you’re referring to specific people, please change the names for confidentiality reasons.)
