Mental Health Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme

Overview
The Scheme is a long term initiative funded by the Australian Government to encourage and support people interested in undertaking postgraduate study in mental health nursing and clinical psychology disciplines.
The aim of the scheme is to address the current shortage of qualified mental health professionals by increasing the number of students who enter and complete their study in mental health nursing or clinical psychology.
Scholarships are provided to assist such students in meeting accommodation, living and travel costs incurred while studying.

How to apply
This scheme is now closed. Information regarding applications for 2011 will be available closer to the opening of the application round in 2010.
Value of scholarship
The Scheme provides financial assistance up to $15,000 for full time study or up to $7,500 for part time study in 2010, up to a maximum of $30,000 per applicant. Funding will be provided up to $30,000 for 2 years full time or 4 years part time study.
Scholarships will be paid based on the successful applicants study load per semester.
Criteria
To be eligible to apply for this Scheme, applicants must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident and be a Registered Nurse with a current practicing certificate in an Australian State or Territory.
Preference will be given to applicants from a rural or remote background, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people or applicants currently working in the Mental Health sector. Applicants who are living in metropolitan areas or are not currently working in the Mental Health sector may be considered.
Scholarships are available annually for students studying or intending to study Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Masters studies in mental health nursing at an Australian University or registered training organisation (for example, a Graduate Certificate through the NSW Institute of Psychiatry).
For the 2009 application round for study in 2010, applicants must be undertaking postgraduate study in mental health nursing in Semester One 2010 (or Semester Two 2010 or Trimester Two 2010 where the university only offers this intake).
