Royal College of Nursing, Australia (RCNA) is proud to act as one of the administrators for the Bringing Nurses Back into the Workforce (BNBW) program funded through the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing.

The Bringing Nurses Back into the Workforce (BNBW) program is an Australian Government initiative which aims to bring an extra 6,200 nurses/midwives back into our public hospitals; 1,550 nurses back into our private hospitals; and 1,000 nurses into residential aged care homes within five years.

This program will provide:

  • A cash bonus of up to $6,000 (pro-rata), in two payments of up to $3,000, at six and eighteen months re-employment, for nurses/midwives to return to the workforce
  • Payments of up to $1,000 (pro-rata) per nurse/midwife to the employing hospital or aged care home.

The aims of the BNBW program are to:

  • Reduce the nursing shortages across the hospital system, both in the public and private sectors and in residential aged care homes
  • Attract 8,750 of the estimated 30,000 qualified nurses who are currently outside the nursing workforce back into nursing
  • Provide cash bonuses to eligible nurses/midwives who return to work, and to hospitals and aged care homes that employ an eligible nurse/midwife under the program.
