
The Mental Health Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme is a long term initiative funded by the Australian Government to encourage and support people interested in undertaking postgraduate study in mental health nursing and clinical psychology disciplines.
The aim of the Scheme is to address the current shortage of qualified mental health professionals by increasing the number of students who enter and complete their study in mental health nursing or clinical psychology. Scholarships are provided to assist such students in meeting accommodation, living and travel costs incurred while studying.
The next round of applications for study in 2009 has been delayed. It is anticpated that this round will open in August 2008. Please continue to check this website for updates. Application/Guideline forms will be available to download from the opening date.
To be eligible to apply for this Scheme, applicants must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident and be a Registered Nurse (VIC only - Division 1 or Division 3 Nurse) with a current practicing certificate in an Australian State or Territory. Preference may be given to applicants from a rural or remote background, applicants of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent or applicants currently working in the Mental Health sector.
Scholarships are available annually for Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Masters, PhD and Post doctoral studies in mental health nursing at an Australian University or registered training organisation (for example, a Graduate Certificate through the NSW Institute of Psychiatry). For the 2008 application round for study in 2009, applicants must be commencing postgraduate study in mental health nursing in Semester One 2009 (or Semester Two 2009 or Trimester Two 2009 where the university only offers this intake).
Scholarships worth up to $10,000 per annum for full time study and up to $5,000 per annum for part time study (up to a maximum of $40,000) are available for the usual duration of the course of study. Scholarships will be paid based on the successful applicants indicated study load per semester.
