The Laura Saunderson Extended Care Nursing Fund pays tribute to a woman who made a unique contribution to nursing in Western Australia. The Fund provides financial assistance to West Australian Registered and Enrolled Nurses working in the field of gerontology
Laura Saunderson completed her general nursing and midwifery training in the United Kingdom and served in the British Army Nursing Service in Europe and the Middle East. Following her arrival in Western Australia in the 1950's, Laura Saunderson nursed in several country hospitals. In 1964, she was appointed Assistant Matron at Mount Henry Hospital, Como.
At this time the Public Health Department Geriatric Service ( later to be known as the Extended Care Service) and Mount Henry Hospital established the first restorative Unit in the state. In acknowledgment of her geriatric nursing expertise and innovative qualities, Laura Saunderson took charge of this unit. Extended Care Services were further established in country hospitals by Ms Saunderson. She initiated in-service courses in gerontological rehabilitation at Mount Henry Hospital on behalf of the Medical Department of Western Australia. She worked tirelessly throughout this period to promote rehabilitation and independence of the aged.
Following her death, Ms Saunderson's family wished to establish a fund in her memory that would assist nurses working in the field of gerontology. In addition to the funds donated by her family, aged care nurses who had known and admired her assisted with fund raising.
